CONT UFFERN PENYGROES - T-Shirt
Cont Uffern Penygroes — Dyffryn Nantlle’s finest. Penygroes is a village in Gwynedd, sitting in the valley between the Nantlle Ridge and the Lleyn Peninsula, surrounded by slate country and strong opinions. It is the kind of place that knows exactly what it is, has no interest in being anything else, and will tell you so directly.
In Welsh, “uffern” means hell, used here as an intensifier in the same way the English might say “bloody” or “flipping” — except with considerably more conviction. “Cont”, contrary to what you might think, is not a swear word in Welsh. In Caernarfon and across much of north Wales it’s a term of endearment. You’ll be greeted with “iawn cont?” — “you alright, cont?” — by people who are very pleased to see you. Put it together and you have a phrase that is, in context, entirely affectionate.
