Lots of Conts - Mug
Did you know the Welsh word for jellyfish is Cont y Môr — “cont of the sea”? And contrary to what you might think, “cont” in Welsh isn’t a swear word. In Caernarfon, it’s a term of endearment. You’ll be greeted with “Iawn cont?” — “you alright, cont?”
We’ve taken this linguistic gem and applied it to the full cast of Welsh wildlife:
- Cont y Sglods — the seagull. Obsessed with your chips. No remorse.
- Cont y Cnau — the squirrel. Steals your nuts. Looks smug about it.
- Cont y Cae — the mole. Ruins the farmer’s field. Underground. Untouchable.
- Cont y Bath — the spider. Living in your bath. Has been there longer than you. Considers it his bath.
- Cont y Bin — the wasp. Hangs around the bins all summer contributing absolutely nothing. Gets aggressive if you point this out.
- Cont y Dail — the hedgehog. Prickly. Lives in a pile of leaves. Entirely self-satisfied.
- Cont y Binbag — the fox. Has an unhealthy interest in your bin bags. No boundaries.
It’s a Welsh language lesson. It’s a nature guide. It’s a conversation starter. Teach your friends some Welsh.
