The Newport Rising of 1839 — the last armed insurrection on British soil — started here, when thousands of Chartists marched on the Westgate Hotel demanding the right to vote. They were met with soldiers. Newport has been making its feelings known ever since.
Birthplace of Michael Sheen, who has used his fame to become the conscience of Wales, which is a lot of pressure for one man from Newport. Home of the Dragons rugby team. For years, Newport had a fully functioning bus station while Cardiff did not, which Newport considered a significant victory. Cardiff now has a bus station. Newport is choosing to move on.
