Llandrindod Wells — the spa town that Victorian Britain built on the premise that drinking sulphurous water from the ground would cure gout, rheumatism, and the general misery of being alive in the 1880s. It worked, apparently, because they kept coming. The grand hotels went up, the pump rooms were built, and Llandrindod became the place to be seen taking the waters in mid-Wales, which admittedly had limited competition.

These days people come for company away days at the Metropole Hotel, the occasional conference, and the Victorian Festival in September where everyone dresses up and pretends it’s 1895. It has a bike museum. It is the capital of Powys, which is the largest county in Wales by area and contains approximately four people per square mile. Llandrindod is where they all go for a meeting.
