Llangollen — a small town in the Dee Valley that has absolutely no business being as interesting as it is. Home of the International Eisteddfod since 1947, which has been bringing musicians, dancers and folk groups from across the world to north-east Wales every July, because Wales decided that if the world wouldn’t come to Wales, Wales would invite it personally and put on a show.
Also home to the Ladies of Llangollen — Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby — who eloped here in 1778, set up house together at Plas Newydd, became celebrated figures of Georgian society, and received visits from Wordsworth, Walter Scott, and the Duke of Wellington. The bridge over the Afon Dyfrdwy is one people jump off for fun into the river below, which tells you everything you need to know about the spirit of the place.
The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carries the Llangollen Canal 38 metres above the Dee on a cast iron trough with no sides. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and genuinely terrifying to walk across. Thomas Telford built it in 1805 and clearly had no fear of heights or lawsuits.
