PONTYPRIDD - Hoodie

The name Pontypridd derives from Pont y tŷ pridd — Welsh for “bridge of the earthen house” — referring to successive wooden bridges that once spanned the Afon Taf at this point. It is now a town that has absolutely no need to exaggerate its history because the actual history is extraordinary enough.

Pontypridd railway station was home, at one point, to the world’s longest railway platform. The Welsh national anthem, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, was composed here in 1856 by local poets and musicians Evan James and James James — father and son, which is either a sign of great family harmony or a complete failure of imagination in the naming department. The town was also home to the eccentric Dr William Price, who performed the first modern cremation in the United Kingdom in 1884, was prosecuted for it, was acquitted, and then had himself cremated when he died. Pontypridd hosted the National Eisteddfod in 1893 and again in 2024. It contains multitudes.
