Y Mwmbwls — The Mumbles — gets its name from the monastery the Mumbling Nuns of Gorseinon inhabited. They were banished from Gorseinon because people couldn’t understand what they were saying, causing massive shop queues. This is the official explanation and we are sticking to it.
It is now better known as where people from Swansea go for ice cream, and as the home of the Milltir Mwmbwls — the Mumbles Mile — a cultural activity where groups travel from one pub to another until they end up mumbling and dribbling, thus completing the circle. Dylan Thomas drank here. Catherine Zeta-Jones grew up nearby. Bonnie Tyler — she of Total Eclipse of the Heart, the greatest voice in Welsh rock history, and a proud resident of Mumbles — lived here until her recent passing. The pier has been there since 1898 and has survived everything the Bristol Channel has thrown at it, which is considerable. Some places earn their legends. Mumbles keeps collecting them.
