YR ANGYLION - T-Shirt
YR ANGYLION — The Angels. That's what Los Angeles means. And if you think Wales has nothing to do with it, you haven't been paying attention.
Griffith J. Griffith was born in Bettws, near Bridgend. He made a fortune in American mining, bought the Rancho Los Feliz, and then donated over 3,000 acres to the city of Los Angeles. That land became Griffith Park — the mountainous backdrop where the Hollywood sign stands today. A Welshman from Bridgend literally built the hill the sign sits on. You're welcome, Hollywood.
And then there's Peg Entwistle. Born in Port Talbot, she was a stage actress who moved to Los Angeles and lived with her uncle on Beachwood Drive — directly beneath the giant HOLLYWOODLAND letters when they were erected in 1923. A Welsh woman lived in the shadow of the Hollywood sign before most people knew it existed.
After that came the stars. Anthony Hopkins (Margam, Port Talbot) collected two Oscars and made it look easy. Richard Burton (also Port Talbot) practically invented brooding on screen. Timothy Dalton from Colwyn Bay was James Bond. Catherine Zeta-Jones from Swansea won an Oscar and made Hollywood look like it needed her, not the other way around.
Wales didn't just send people to Los Angeles. Wales built Los Angeles. The park. The sign. The stars beneath it. Yr Angylion. The Angels. They were ours first.
Wear the skyline. Wear the name. Yr Angylion am byth.
