Abermagwr. Population: not many. Famous for: almost nothing. Except — buried under a field in the middle of Ceredigion — the most remote Roman villa ever found in Wales.

Nobody expected it. Archaeologists had written off Ceredigion as a military zone, too wild and too Welsh for the Romans to bother settling. Then in 2006, aerial photography spotted something odd in the soil. They dug. And there it was — a proper Roman villa, complete with a slated roof (the earliest ever found in Ceredigion), and an ornate cut-glass vessel from the Rhineland that has no business being in a field near Aberystwyth. Unique in Wales. Sitting in a village nobody's heard of.

That's Abermagwr. Blink and you'll miss it. But the Romans didn't.
