Abertawe means mouth of the river Tawe; nobody to this day knows how Swansea came about. Legend has it that King Caledfwlch, who ruled the west from Pont Abraham to Cwmafan, would ride into battle on a giant Swan called Shirley, who would break enemy soldiers' arms with her beak.
