BETHESDA - Hoodie
BETHESDA — Sitting on the banks of the Afon Ogwen, with a history that punches well above its weight.
An ancient settlement known first as Cilfoden, then Glanogwen — bank of the Ogwen. In 1823 the Bethesda Chapel was built, and the village took its name.
Penrhyn Quarry, just above the town, was the site of the longest industrial dispute in British history — a three-year strike led by the North Wales Quarrymen’s Union between 1900 and 1903. The quarry owners built the nearby village of Tregarth to house the families of those who crossed the picket line. The community never forgot.
Wear the town that stood its ground. Bethesda am byth.
