What we do know: the Romans built one of the most impressive legionary fortresses in Britain here — Isca Augusta, home of the Second Augustan Legion. The amphitheatre is still there. Geoffrey of Monmouth claimed it was the site of King Arthur’s court. The pub is also still there.
