Eidyn is the ancient name for the region where Edinburgh now stands. It shares a root with the Welsh word eithin — meaning gorse, the prickly, yellow-flowered shrub that once covered these hillsides. Caer means fort or castle. So Caeredin is, quite literally, the fort of the gorse.
